*** So we should pull 'To Kill A Mockingbird' from the shelves because it makes some people uncomfortable due the vile epithets used?
***
***
***Could there be a realistic book dealing with that place and time which did not include the n-word?

***
***It was supposed to make people uncomfortable, you idiots..

***Why would any decent human being take comfort in the fate of Tom Robinson?

***I believe that book was an incredibly brave one and I hate to see it besmirched now...

**Agreed fully. Same here with Animal Farm and 1984.
**
**I have yet to read Harper's sequel....albeit a written prequel...I read the reviews and they not too good.

*Seems that Harper Lee's editor saw a spark in the original draft but felt the strongest parts of the book were the flashbacks to Scout's childhood...He advised her to tell the story through the eyes of Scout as a kid...She took that advice and transfprmed a mediocre work into a magical one...

agreed, tbh, it's one of my all time favourite reads, regularly re-read it, so much so that I've had to buy new copy as my original paperback literally fell apart.

will get round to Scout as an adult eventually.

what really bothers me about these kind of texts tho' is the thought that they will be adulterated or re-written to make them more 'pc'.....and with the advent of e-books etc, the closure of libraries etc (dare say that is a world wide phenomena, not just a UK problem) that is easily done..., and who in the future would know, how many times has the Bible for instance been re-written....Fahrenheit 451 springs to mind, think we're at the beginning of that stage...if we allow it to happen that is....
