Their lust for sensationalism is creating panic and chaos more than the storm itself. Stay safe and if the lights go out just use a spoon to stir that rum. lol.

************Meteorologists are weather guessers..even on daily temperatures.
************Some are more reliable than others. Hurricane basically went up the west side of Florida in a NNW direction. I'll be getting some of the leftover wind and rain where I am later today into tonight. My family down there are fine and were communicating with me the whole time. They had a temporary loss of power and at one point their yard was under water but none of it got inside house so they are fine. Just waiting for everything to dry out and clean up.

***********Hi Winston, so glad to hear all well for your folks, bet you are too.......a real worrying time for all.
***********
***********I was watching it on that Windy site, in real time, which is based on satellite observations and according to that it deffo went up west coast. I couldn't understand why at the very same time CNN showing it veering into central FL then up towards east coast???......just didn't sit right, wish I'd recorded some way what I witnessed . I agree meteorologists often get it wrong, it made me think what the??.....especially with talk here from people in the thick of it, of it all being overblown (pardon pun).....were CNN fearmongering the folks on east coast???.....
***********
***********my folks are all good, no property damage, however power still out for them and Myakka overflowing in parts....
***********
***********One of the fears for them I guess (apart from obvious) was looting, they own a pawn shop.....police had them remove all guns etc, as safety measure, which is a good thing, but then added pressure to secure them and their future livelihood ....some of the looting that has been reported is just mindboggling......can understand people without food/ water, but tv's and training shoes??....in my mind, necessities should just be given to folks in need, think it's disgusting that store owners can charge excessive amount of money for water in those situations.
***********
***********It was also quite disgusting imo that so many on social media were delighted at the thought that Trumps property would take direct hit....don't care what anyone thinks of his politics, aren't people facing something like that all together???
***********
***********anyhow glad all ok, wonder if it's safe to take boards/ shutters down until this hurricane season is over....

**********
**********I really don't understand the motives behind the scare tactics stations like CNN and MSNBC use to create chaos and panic. Sometimes making things sound way worse than they really are, they maybe feel gives some people the initiative to act and get out even if they were never in danger in the first place. Their motives for reporting such inaccurate news is horrible and at times questionable.
**********
*********
*********Irma was coming in as the strongest storm in history. "185 mph max winds for 37 hours the longest any cyclone around the globe has maintained that intensity on record."
*********"3 consecutive days as a Category 5 hurricane the longest for an Atlantic hurricane in the satellite era (since 1966)"
*********
*********That's not sensationalism, those are recorded facts.
*********
*********It's already been asked, but what exactly would you like the media to do here? The facts are this was one wicked ass storm that was tracking directly up the shaft of America's wang. Thankfully for all, it did shift west and its intensity did weaken as it came in. That doesn't change the fact that 90% of the properties in the Keys have damage, 25% were destroyed, and total costs could be $172 billion. That's just the US and doesn't take into account the catastrophic damage and loss that was felt all across the Caribbean. How would you prefer the media report such events?
*********
*********
**********Once again the media is all about sensationalism .. it's not about factual reporting anymore. Most MSM outlets are on the same level as most supermarket tabloids are now. And of course there is always a certain degree of looting that takes place every time areas are ordered to evacuate. People taking advantage of people. Human nature at it's worst. It's disgusting. Most of it brought on by those who are without care, respect and common sense and completely lacking compassion and yes also brought on by the media who gives them the opportunity to do such things by reporting which areas are completely evacuated or devoid of law enforcement to keep an eye on those areas.
**********
**********Some say people are basically born good natured and caring.
**********I disagree. In my view, All people are natural born assholes and to what degree they become one, defines them. Some of these people who wish ill upon Trump and his Florida estate (or anyone else for that matter), are the same caliber of people who went out doing everything they could to disrupt, destroy and cause chaos after the election when it didn't go their way. Most of it produced by Leftist malcontents, driven by people like George Soros who actually has some of these misfits on his payroll.
**********People like Hillary Clinton who even now still parades around
**********pushing a new book trying to grasp reasons why she lost and
**********sits in the background pushing these resistance drives and
**********pushing people to act or say things against the current administration.
**********
**********An example..there is a local Democratic politician near me in St Louis who put up an entry on her Facebook page that she hoped Trump would be assassinated. Of course, everyone is demanding her immediate resignation, but thus far she hasn't budged. I personally would be pushing for an arrest and some jail time for her as well. I don't know what drives these people to think and say such things..just pure hate and disrespect I would say. And I believe it's time they start being held more accountable and made an example of. It's been going on for far too long already.
**********
**********Sad.
**********
*********
*********It's amazing to me that you can somehow shift this to "Leftist malcontents" you seem to think are to blame for anything wrong in the world. Even a natural disaster somehow falls on them and you can turn the discussion to Hillary...impressive.
********
********
********
********I am not impressed that you can cite facts of the hurricane
********and considering it wasn't a category 5 when it came up the Florida coastline apparently doesn't phase you.
********
*******
*******Apparently the facts regarding the storm BEFORE it hit Florida don't phase you. Hindsight is 20/20 and it's quite easy to claim that it was overhyped AFTER the storm shifted to the west and was weakened because Cuba took a direct hit. Why don't you talk to someone in Cuba and ask if this storm was just hype and sensationalist journalism. Look at the complete devastation all across the Caribbean. Look at the massive destruction throughout the Keys. Ask the people that did take the full force of the storm what the facts are. Ask them if they could have gotten out of the path of the storm, if they would have.
*******
*******
********The fact remains that were WAS erroneous reporting that put
********people in danger needlessly. People did panic and inevitably it DOES lead to accidents and casualties. That's a fact.
********
*******
*******Really? Tell me which one of these 26 deaths was caused by panic prior to the storm.
*******
*******What was erroneously reported? Were the facts regarding the storm prior to hitting Florida inaccurate? Were the projections and forecasts they had available at the time reported incorrectly?
*******
********My oldest daughter lives in Florida and she said the same thing
********that HJ posted above. There was unnecessary panic in people from the media reports who were in fact not in imminent danger, but
********because the media said they were, they panic and fled.
********
*******
*******Even in Jacksonville they still had storm surges and flooding that "surpassed previous highs recorded in 1864". So while your daughter claims everything was all hunky dory, it seems that things were still pretty bad. "Irma's impact surpassed what officials expected". I think I'll trust the reports from officials rather than what one person related to you had to say. Your daughter should count herself lucky if she wasn't impacted, but that doesn't change the fact that the storm was still pretty wicked and did cause intense destruction.
*******
********The media will claim they had the best of intentions to make sure nobody got hurt, but at the same time, when someone who wasn't in imminent danger in the first place, ends up getting hurt because
********of their erroneous reporting and scare tactics, the media will not take any responsibility for their error.
********
********What should the media do? how about something called responsible journalism and getting some facts before spreading their scare tactics.
********
*******
*******They did report the facts as they had them. It is such an idiotic view to claim that because the storm was weakened as it destroyed Cuba and didn't hit Florida as directly or with as much intensity as possible that the media was irresponsible with its reporting.
******
******
******
******
******Look at the comments about what happened down there..a German, a Canadian and someone who wishes he lived in Africa somewhere..
******all talking as if you know better than someone who actually lived through it down there..
******
*****
*****No one is talking as if we know better, we are talking from a wider perspective than your anecdotal evidence from one person and trying to point out that calling something that caused serious widespread, catastrophic damage 'hype', 'sensationalism', 'fake news' etc is just plain stupid.
*****
******You weren't down THERE when it happened. So just mindlessly chatter away. I'll keep the facts that I get from the actual people down there that lived through it and not rely solely on the media.
******
*****
*****No, you will dismiss any fact that doesn't support your idiotic, view of the world.
*****
*****
******I (nor she) ever claimed that things around her were "hunky dory". You should learn to listen. She's rode out quite a number
******of Hurricanes down there and this one was just one more. Don't try to construe this into your typical idiotic argumentative BS.
******I got my facts from those who are there.
******
******Deal with it.

*****
*****"Gov. Scott Warns Anyone in Irma Evacuation Zone: 'You've Got to Get Out Now'"
*****
*****Was Fox News irresponsible for reporting the direct words of the Governor of the state? Was every news outlet irresponsible for reporting the same?
*****
*****Why do you blame the media here? Why not blame NOAA? Why not blame the Republican governor for following the NOAA?
*****
*****Please explain the 'erroneous reporting' you think happened here and show me just one single example of a casualty caused by it.
*****
*****Yes, this is my typical idiotic argumentative BS of linking actual facts and sources to counter your argument of "someone I know says BLA BLA BLA".
****
****
****
****All I'm saying is if you weren't there then you don't know the real story. I've had several people actually down there say the media was misleading at times..so tell me "Einstein" who to believe...my relatives and friends who are actually down there or your supermarket tabloid minded media whose only goal these days is sensationalism and scare tactics. I'm sure many people just stayed in their homes and survived without evacuating. Everyone I know down there did just that.
****The media certainly isn't going to say if someone got hurt because of "misinformation". But don't take it for granted just because someone doesn't cite a specific incident because of being misinformed, that it didn't happen. Considering the thousands who were affected by this Hurricane the probability may be higher than you think. Just ask those folks at that nursing home where 12 people died. Was it misinformation? Someone didn't do their job..

***You weren't there either, Archie. So it's ALL hearsay if you wanna get technical about it. But one of you is citing people who have no real knowledge of the weather aside from looking out the window and saying "yup, sure as shit it's raining out! Get the um brella, Ma!". The other is citing reports done by reporters who spoke with people whose sole job it is to study and know about the weather and what it can and will probably do in situations like this.
***
***I do find it suspect that at the start of this thread you kept saying "I spoke with my daughter my daughter my daughter..." and now that you're being backed into a corner it's family and friends, as if adding more people somehow gives your argument more merit. It doesn't, it just makes you look desperate.
**
**
**I don't appreciate the fact that you imply that my daughter and her family are liars or passing off false information.
**You're acting just as ignorant as CR is. Neither of you have a clue as to what really went on down there. I was in constant direct contact during that Hurricane with my daughter and her family and friends. I think they know more about what went on down there than you and your elitist pals. Stop making me laugh.

*Reading comprehension is awesome, you should try it sometime. Nowhere did I call your family liars. What I did say was that given the choice between who I am going to get meteorological information from, a real meteorologist versus winstons "man on the street", I'll go with the professional who has made it their life's work to study the weather.

you fell into the typical Winston trap. Looks as if you didn't notice that he had changed the topic of this thread exactly in the moment he would have been forced to admit that he was wrong. As per usual. Facts don't mean anything in his world.
