*********From the Playboy interview:
*********
*********"PLAYBOY: "Getting Better."
*********
*********LENNON: It is a diary form of writing. All that "I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved" was me. I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically -- any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn't express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That is why I am always on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace. Everything's the opposite. But I sincerely believe in love and peace. I am not violent man who has learned not to be violent and regrets his violence. I will have to be a lot older before I can face in public how I treated women as a youngster."
*********
*********The ironic thing is that he preached love and non-violence, but he hit Cynthia and cheated on her and Ono. A world-class hypocrite.
********
********there is no irony there - maybe you don't understand the meaning of the word irony
********
********how is something ironic if one is stating that they used to behave this way but have grown and educated themselves and no longer do it and regret it?
********
********now beyond this point lennon often exaggerates
********
********Cynthia Lennon has clearly stated that he slapped her ONE TIME and apologized profusely saying he would never do it again and she stated, "John was true to his word he never did"
********
********so why do you feel the need to continually raise this? because you do continually raise this.
********
********and yes he cheated on Yoko - and they separated for a period - are you seriously saying you have never heard this happening before especially in the music world??
********
********nobody said he was perfect, least of all lennon himself - john almost relished in a kind of flagellation
*******
*******I bring it up because there is a whole mythology about him that is just not 100% true.
*******
*******And hitting a woman once is once too much - what a cowardly thing to do, let alone one's own wife!
*******
*******It made his peace and love stuff only so much nonsense. Sorry for the strong opinion. But I feel very strongly about spousal abuse.
******
******Well said backbeat! John was not a hypocrite. He was honest about his own shortcomings and strived to rise above them. A hypocrite claims to be praiseworthy, when, in actuality, he is not.
******
***** After his tragic death many made John out to be a Christ like figure. I think even John wouldn't agree with that view of himself. I think he'd appreciate being remembered as a great singer/songwriter and someone who promoted peace. But he was far from perfect. At times he could be a pretty bitter and insecure man.
*****
****
****I actually have pity on him; the tragic thing is that he did not live long enough to even change much, although he really did mellow in the Dakota years between 1976 and 1980.
***
*** Yeah on one end it's easy for some to say that John was a hypocrite and often did not pratice what he preached. But on the other side of things he did mellow in his last few years and thanks to a certain piece of you know what we never got to see what an older John Lennon would be like. By no means am I saying that had John lived he would've become a Saint. But he never got the chance to say better his relationship with Julian. And while he was pretty anti Beatles in the early 70s those who knew him well claim that he had kind of come to terms with having been a Beatle by the late 70s. He even thought the Beatlefests were a great idea. I don't think The Beatles would've ever resumed being a fully active band again. But had John lived I do think there would've been a reunion of some sort. The Beatles Anthology was reportedly already in its very early stages before John's death. So the four would've likely had some interaction for that. The common belief is that Live Aid would've brought the four back together again had John lived. Maybe it would've but sadly we weren't meant to find out.
**
**I believe the Anthology concept had been in the planning for years.
**
**He did improve with time, as all of us do. It's just a shame that he didn't become more vocal about spousal abuse. It is such a problem, world-wide. I guess I am very sensitive to the subject since I know some family members who were a victim of it.
*
*did you avoid me purposely??
*
*as i responded to you above:
*
*"i'm really not sure why you're so hung up on this.
*
*Lennon actually did very much apologize; to Cynthia, the one he should apologize to (not you, or me) - and as she said he was true to his word and never did it again. she in fact later married him.
*
*Also Lennon has articulated, many times, how he was a violent youth who had to learn how to be peaceful. He talk about it many times - he never tried to hide it or defend it or rationalize it. he acknowledged that his actions were wrong and that he learned from it.
*
*Lennon: I am a violent man who has learned not to be violent and regrets his violence.
*
*why you feel the need to hang on to it i have no idea."
*
*as Paul says - "these stories grow, and you believe them"

My only point was to start a discussion about domestic violence, that some of our idols had feet of clay and were guilty of it. John Lennon, Phil Spector, OJ Simpson - there are enough incidents of violence to go around.

John married Yoko, went on a macrobiotic diet, had a son and baked bread, and mellowed out.

Phil was just being loony Phil, guns and all. Enjoy prison life, Phil!

Did OJ repent, too? I he still looking for the killers? Oh my!
