*Ever think for a moment that the beloved Rubber Soul Man is replete with misogynist, sarcastic and bitter songs:
*
*Listen carefully to the lyrics in the following songs:
*
*Drive My Car (told from the girl's point of view: Paul turned the table around here):
*
*'Working for peanuts is all very fine
*But I can show you a better time'
*
*and of course 'Beep beep'm beep beep yeah' are code words for sex
*
*You Won't See Me (the entire song is about breaking up, based on his break up with Jane Asher):\
*
*'I have had enough
*So act your age'
*
*Girl (told from the perspective of the dumped boy friend):
*
*'When I think of all the times I tried so hard to leave her
*She will turn to me and start to cry
*And she promises the earth to me and I believe her
*After all this time I don't know why'
*
*and
*
*'She's the kind of girl who puts you down
*When friends are there,
*You feel a fool'
*
*and
*
*'Was she told when she was young that pain would lead to pleasure? (am I the only one who thinks this is referring to losing one's virginity?)
*
*'Did she understand it when they said
*That a man must break his back to earn his day of leisure?
*Will she still believe it when he's dead?'
*
*and of course who can forget the chorus of 'tit tit tit'
*
*I'm Looking Through You
*
*'I'm looking through you, where did you go?
*I thought I knew you, what did I know?'
*
*and
*
*'You don't sound different, I've learned the game
*I'm looking through you, you're not the same'
*
*and
*
*'Why, tell me why, did you not treat me right?
*Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight'
*
*and of course
*
*'Yeah
*Oh baby I'm changed
*Ah I'm looking through you
*Yeah I'm looking through you'
*
*I love this song - so unlike Paul's many lovey dovey ones proceeding it, especially Michelle on the same album
*
*
*If I Needed Someone
*
*(George being bitter and sarcastic again - boy did he have some issues then!)
*
*'Carve your number on my wall
*And maybe you will get a call from me
*If I needed someone
*Ah, ah'
*
*and the mother lode of them all
*
*Run For Your Life
*
*'Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
*Than to be with another man'
*
*and
*
*'You better run for your life if you can, little girl
*Hide your head in the sand little girl
*Catch you with another man
*That's the end ah little girl'
*
*and
*
*'Well I know that I'm a wicked guy
*And I was born with a jealous mind
*And I can't spend my whole life
*Trying just to make you toe the line'
*
*and
*
*'Let this be a sermon
*I mean everything I've said
*Baby, I'm determined
*And I'd rather see you dead'
*
*(I can just see now John beating up his girlfriends and poor Cynthia)
*
*That's all folks!

Interesting analysis. The Beatles have the reputation of being this nothing but "Peace and Love" group but they had their share of biting and sometimes dark lyrics. John later hated "Run For Your Life" primarily because it was suggesting possible murder.
