*I read a review of the album in which Martin states that they went back to the mono master as the source of the remixing. My question is, how do you create a stereo mix from a mono master? I am totally confused. It sounds more like the awful Capitol Records Duophonic albums from the 60's. I must be completely missing something. Sorry for my ignorance.

I think they just mean they based the mix (where instruments and vocals sit in the song, effects, fades, etc) off the mono version and not the stereo version. The two are really different if you listen to them.

The stereo version was almost an after thought so not much time or effort was put into it. So when remixing it they basically followed the mono version (the one the Beatles themselves approved). Thus creating a stereo version more closely resembling the vision the Beatles had.
