*****I just saw an article that says that Katy Perry is being taken to task for changing the words to Yesterday. What was the crime? A gender change - "Why he had to go...".
*****I think this is a big non-issue, seeing as how The Beatles changed gender in cover songs (Please Mr. Postman), and even changed the title of "Devil in His Heart".
*****What says you - desecration of a classic, or standard protocol when singing this type of song?
****Slight correction, apparently she sang "I'm not half the girl I used to be..." It still doesn't change my position that gender based lyrics are subject to be changed based on who is singing.*
***no & I thought she did a pretty job with it
** I thought her cover of Yesterday was decent. And I do agree that gender based lyrics should be changed if a person of the opposite sex is covering the song.
*I finally watched it. The emotion she put into it was amazing!
Well of course you would change the gender to suit your own if you're idea is to retain the original meaning of the words.
Now if I sang Yesterday and changed it to He instead of she I would be altering the message of the song which would also be fine but the song would have an altogether different tone.
Much ado about nothing
