******** No possessions would mean you'd never have gotten to hear that

*******
*******i don't think he meant no possessions and having nothing but rather the idea of being possessed by possessions - which is a buddha and probably many other religious or philosophical penchants - in that it's ok to have things but to be possessed by them to the point of extremes or stress and worry etc. etc.
*******
*******my 2 cents....

******And who is qualified to judge as to when it becomes 'extreme'?

******When it crosses that line?

*****the individual - that's the point, it is not literal otherwise we wouldn't have pants as they are possessions - it is being possessed by them, which is individual in ones journey, spiritual or otherwise...
****
****
****
****
****Precisely... Yet we are bombarded constantly by people who judge as to when others have enough... If one takes stock of him or herself and decides that things have become more burdensome than beneficial and acts upon that, great...
****
****
****But when people decide for others why they acquire these possessions and how much is too much, that's dangerous territory......
***
***Dude, when ppl are camped outside Best Buy at 11:30 pm on Thanksgiving night, that's pretty friggin' extreme
**
**
**
**What you do on a particular Thursday night in November is your concern...
**
**
**What they're doing isn't really any body else's business if they're not directly impacted by what takes place....
*
*Are you saying we shouldn't be concerned by other people's extreme behavior if we aren't directly affected by it?
*

I'm saying it's debatable whether the behavior is truly extreme...

*Or are you saying that being out there at 11:30 on Thanksgiving night isn't extreme?
*

Not in and of itself, no...

*Or something else?
*
*For me, I think being out there could be extreme if a person is obsessed with acquiring an object or just experiencing the high of buying something like a shopaholic would. People can get excited over different things sometimes though so most of the shopping is probably harmless.
*

Whatever their reasons for buying happen to be, I don't consider that any of my business...If I'm in line and somebody cuts in or wants to punch me out because I grabbed the last item and they want it, that's entirely different...

But if people prefer to watch Uncle Jim snore in the recliner than be in line at 11:30 PM, good on 'em... That's really not my business either...

As Neil Young once put it "They do their thing, I do mine."

*I think most shoppers are o.k. but I feel for people who would rather have a holiday off and can't get extended time for their families. It seems shopping a day later would make more sense in the this case. It's tough for employees to say no to this extra work on these days since they can be fired if they refuse. I think we value materialism more than relationships now to the point the market must keep operating so someone must always earn a profit no matter what the costs are to the people who help them earn that profit.
*
*Also, I think Black Friday is overrated for it's ability to save people money. Most stores offer lower prices on other days before or after Black Friday. If anything it's used as a marketing tool to get people excited and increase profits.

The people can think it's overrated can choose not to participate...

Shopping isn't a criminal act, you know..

Let 'em do their thing and I'm pretty sure they won't mind if some make a different choice..
