****what would be the big deal if the National Parks were permanently shuttered anyway?
****
****taken away from Federal control?
****
****why not simply turn them over the states that they are in to administer?
****
****the Feds could allocate the money that was in the budget to run that particular park for the 1st year & give it to the host state - after that it would be up to the state to decide how & if it should be funded with any proceeds coming from tourism going back to the state
****
****perhaps giving the state some sort of ongoing partial & time limited tax credit to help with the funding
****
****after all - isn't the Federal government's job to oversee & protect the nation as a whole (the common good/external threats) rather than overseeing acreage that resides within an individual state's boundaries?
****
****let the states determine the best way to handle & administer them in a way that's best for the state
****
****how did the Feds become "the groundskeepers" with the rest of the nation funding their operations for areas of land that reside within a given state & who benefit from the land being where it is?
****
****just a thought...........

***As cr said, greed will take over. They would start looking at state parks that don't make enough from tourism and shut them down and build on all that acreage. Prime example is my hometown. Our city park got devastated by flood waters years ago destroying some walking bridges. It's been almost 10 years and they still just have construction barriers up and the broken bridges taped off. Why? Because it will cost nearly a million dollars to repair the bridges. Meanwhile they have no problem spending 15 million on reconfiguring parking spaces around town to squeeze in a few more cars.
***
***How long do you think it will be before the wolf population is completely decimated because Yellowstone will be auctioned off to the highest bidder so some corporate asshat can build condos and a water park around old faithful? What about the bear population? All those animals being squeezed out.
***
***Has the parks being federalized been a massive inconenience to you and your family? Is it a huge tax burden that you just don't care for? *
**
**no - the burden is not that tremendous........
**
**"The National Park Service, which operates over 390 units, had a budget of $2.5 Billion in fiscal year 2009."
**
**but when you're running a $14,000,000,000 deficit that's 2 billion that maybe be better turned over to the states
**
**you need to cut where you can
**
**I'm not advocating this as a be all & end all for our budget problems but when you are broke you eliminate what can safely be eliminated. Sure - I'd rather leave things as they are but some things maybe better off handled in a different manner when you can't afford them.
**
**It just crossed my mind..........
**
**
**

*
*That works in theory but that $2.5 billion has to be made up somewhere to keep the parks running. You're freeing up the burden nationally but placing it on the states. The cost of upkeep won't go away. You're just shuffling the dust under the rug so you can say how clean the room is. *
as I said - Feds allocate whatever amount they already had budgeted to run the park & give that to the State the park is located in for the 1st year
after that some sort of tax break on a limited basis to hlp eventually turning over complete control to the stares
States benefit in that all revenue generated by the park goes back to the State
.
I'm not professing to the financial validity of this nor am I professing to know enough about. The thought crossed my mind & after brief contemplation - I thought WHY NOT?
I will leave that to someone more astute than I............
penny saved is a penny?
