*I think it's common knowledge on here that I'm a huge Billy Joel dork. I follow both him and his daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, on Facebook, and recently Alexa's been featured in a GAP ad campaign where she covers "Just the Way You Are," which has always been one of my favorites from way back when I first heard it being sung to Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street.
*
*Until today, all that you could hear of her version without paying was the 30-second clip from the commercial, but apparently she performed the whole thing on Katie Couric's show, and someone uploaded the bit. Alexa posted the video to her fanpage.
*
*Now I've been working on that particular song lately on guitar, so I've been thinking a lot about it, and hearing this particular rendition was like hearing someone else play what was going on in my head. So I posted under the video on her page, not those thoughts exactly, but something inspired by them.
*
*And she replied to me. To *me.* She tagged my name and everything. So far, it's the only reply she's given in the thread. And it made my day. I'm just absolutely geeking out. I don't know what to do with all of this excess energy, it's after midnight over here. I started making strange noises, and my roommate asked if I was okay.
*
*Because in the end, even if it's minor celebrity, or celebrity once-removed, this is still a person I admire. And whether that admiration is misplaced, or whether there's someone else who deserves it more, it doesn't matter. She replied to me. She replied to me. And suddenly I'm a goddamn schoolgirl.
*

I think that's the funside of celebrity. Making contact with people and sharing.

A while back I contacted a couple of kinda sorta famous people just for fun and here's the e-mails I got. It doesn't violate their privacy to publish them here since they're kind of generic, just being nice replies

Hi. Kate Bornstein here. The nice woman who currently owns the outlawgal account name on AOL has kindly forwarded your email on to me. Wow, I dunno what to think, hon. It sounds like you've got a way interesting life ahead of you whatever form you choose to take. Thanks for yer kind words about Gender Outlaw. I'm glad you liked it.

Be well and enjoy the shifting sands.

Hi Diane,

Wow! I don't know if I deserve "magnificent", but thanks anyway! I do feel
things have worked out well for me. That makes me hope others who are
considering transition (maybe you?) will follow their hearts and get on with
it. The best time to get started is the minute you decide it's the right
thing for you.

If you want an update on my story, Runner's World magazine is doing an
in-depth feature article on me which is scheduled for either the June or
July 2005 issue. Of course, it will focus on the effects of my transition on
my running, but will touch on other areas, too.

Best wishes,
Janet

I kind of gave up on music and being Diane(LOL) more or less but maybe you won't give up. ;)
