When you read about the career of Jesse Helms, it's quite remarkable to find so many parallels between Helms and Ron Paul... Yet Helms never had a chance in hell of drawing young voter support the way Paul did... Helms was notorious in his support for segregation... He excoriated the Civil Rights Act Of 1964..... Called the University of NC "The University Of Negroes And Communists"....His volatile remarks on AIDS mirror some of the crap found in the Ron Paul newsletters... He also was very vocal about his negative views on Israel at one point in time..

*
*So why did Helms never have a hope of drawing young voters and Paul had them in droves?
*
*
* My best guess is that Helms was perceived as a fiercely right-wing racist warmonger and Ron Paul is perceived as fiercely anti-war...
*
*
*Which leads me to wonder if a politician is perceived as anti-war, does that render all his other positions trivial no matter how vile they may be?

I forgot to mention one thing.. Ron Paul is often lauded by his fans for his courage.. For his gutsy willingness to be the only one voting against this or that...
Helms was notorious for being the only one voting his way, so much so that he was dubbed 'Senator No' by the media... Yet this did not cause young people to flock to him... Hmmm...
Jesse Helms was a blight upon his state and this nation... He kept his state mired in the most shameful parts of the past year after year after year...
And he would have remained a blight had he experienced some epiphany and then supported a non-interventionist foreign policy... As long as the rest of his views remained the same...
