*************The Miss America pageant crowned Miss New York Nina Davuluri as the winner opening a racist butthurt wormhole over the Internet because she’s one of those brown looking people from the Middle East.
*************
*************Or, I dunno, a natural-born American citizen of Indian descent who practices Hinduism, but let’s just call her a Muslim terrorist who caused 9/11 anyway, said shit-pieces of humanity on Twitter. Which is strange because I could’ve sworn I’ve been repeatedly told racism is over in America because we elected a black president, so I’ll just assume these are his New Secret West Coast Black Panthers trying to make white people look bad. God, the trickery never ends with their kind.

**************Don't believe me that fucknuts are losing their shit over this? Check out the link with lots of their Twitter posts spewing their bile.

************Very ignorant. However, a question I have is WHY do we still have these stupid contests of objectification in 2013.....*
***********
***********because there's money to be made
***********& a large % of the female population seems to like the idea of being objectified
***********
***********
**********
**********there is supposedly a large contingent of women in the middle eastern that agree with wearing the burqa, hijab, niqab or chador etc. doesn't mean it's right and they're not being repressed by dominant male/cultural values imposed on them through hundreds of years of control - we make her paint her face and dance.....
**********
**********Woman is the nigger of the world
**********Yes she is...think about it
**********Woman is the nigger of the world
**********Think about it...do something about it
**********
**********We make her paint her face and dance
**********If she won't be a slave, we say that she don't love us
**********If she's real, we say she's trying to be a man
**********While putting her down, we pretend that she's above us
**********
**********Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
**********If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
**********Woman is the slave of the slaves
**********Ah, yeah...better scream about it
**********
**********We make her bear and raise our children
**********And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen
**********We tell her home is the only place she should be
**********Then we complain that she's too unworldly to be our friend

**********Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
**********If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
**********Woman is the slave to the slaves
**********Yeah...alright...hit it!
**********
**********We insult her every day on TV

********* Did John Lennon make Yoko pose nude with him for an album cover?
*********
*********
********* Did he force her to make a film where a fly crawls over a woman's nude body?
*********
*********
*********Or does the objectification vanish when we decide to define it as art?
********
********I think you're overlooking the point of both, confusing objectification with a critique of objectification. The point of beauty contests is "look at these attractive women. Don't they look good," Do you really think the point of Fly is "look at this nude woman. Isn't she hot?"
*******
*******Indeed. Big difference between the two! It horrifies me that young women are fed this fiction that somehow objectification is empowerment.,e.g., the whole Miley Cyrus thing recently. Being an empowered adult is not equating worth with physical appearance but with the sum total of that person's spirit, beliefs and integrity.
******
******
******
******Fed this fiction? Some women have stated that it was empowering.. Some have said they were treated like ugly ducklings when they were younger...That's just one reason... We don't have to agree with the woman's choice in such matters but I would think we could at least grant her the right to make her own choice and not indulge in this BS about her being forced...
******
******
******Not all women can be placed in the same boat with Miley Cyrus by any means...
******
******
******And those who hold the Miss America title have much more in the way of responsibilities during their reign that just looking pretty..
******
******
******Some have gone on to careers in the entertainment field...
******
******Many have goals far beyond just receiving comments on how hot they are...
*****
*****I am not saying young women don't make personal choices and decisions. I AM saying that as a female, it is NOT empowering to be reduced to body parts regardless of whether we were called ugly ducklings or not. I believe the choices made by many girls are significantly influenced by the wider culture which is about appearance, sex etc.
****
****
****
****
**** Isn't that for the individual woman to decide? Famous fashion models know exactly why they get the magazine covers. They know their look is in demand and they capitalize on it....Are they doing a disservice to womankind by taking advantage of the opportunities available to them because of their looks?
****
****
****There are actresses out there who are more liberal about doing nude scenes and some who adamantly refuse to do them and insist on body doubles.
****
****
****As long as there are men who like looking at beautiful women, there will be women who make the choice to capitalize on that.
****
****
****I'm saying we can't hold society entirely responsible for the choices made by adults of sound mind.
****
****
****

***I think I am speaking more to the ways in which thinking is influenced by culture. Objectification and exploitation based on sex is nothing new. However, it is clear we now live in a culture where anything goes, the more explicit the better. I think this negatively impacts young women (or, let's face it, any women)in many ways. Ever wonder why eating disorders and cosmetic surgery are rampant?
**
**
**
**
** It's not always societal pressure which prompts a woman to have cosmetic surgery...It's often nothing more than what THEY feel when they look in their mirrors...It isn't necessarily any standards set by society.... It's their reaction when they gaze into that glass...goh
**
**
**Yes it is sad to see some in the public eye who rely on cosmetic surgery to the extent that they wind up looking grotesque...Once again, they made the choice to go under the knife...They certainly bear responsibility for the choice the made and its consequences...
**
**
**
*
*I agree; it has everything to do with personal choice. I am not talking about those in the public eye though. I work in the field of mental health and hear and see first hand how hard young women are on themselves based on appearance/weight and how many see their primary value as sexual. I am talking about teens who make many choices informed on the culture around them. I think it is not enough to say "it's a personal choice" without examining what influences these young people to make some of these decisions. We live in the world of "Girls Gone Wild"....
I have absolutely no problem with providing young women with another perspective to consider..... In fact. providing that alternate perspective is about as much as can be done... I don't see the culture improving to any great degree. .Young women do need to be aware that they are in charge of their choices and not their peers, fashion mag bigwigs, or Hollywood......
Once they have the picture, we have to say we've done what we could and let them make their own choices even if those choices aren't the ones we'd prefer...Followup Messages:
