******Americans are slowly waking up to the sad fact that much of the food sold in the US is far inferior to the same foods sold in other nations. In fact, many of the foods you eat are BANNED in other countries.
******Here, I’ll review 10 American foods that are banned elsewhere, which were featured in a recent MSN article.1
******
******Seeing how the overall health of Americans is so much lower than other industrialized countries, you can’t help but wonder whether toxic foods such as these might play a role in our skyrocketing disease rates.

*****Have you read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver? Has to do with a family's efforts at eating locally and seasonally. Very interesting. I have read somewhere that when you go to the grocery store not to buy anything your great grandmother would not recognize as food. This would probably eliminate two thirds of what is currently on the shelves!!

****No havent read that Kieran, thanks for heads up, sounds interesting, were they successful?
****
****That sounds like sage advice too re: food stuff shopping, trouble of course being that a lot of people have lost the skills to, for instance prepare anything from scratch.....most people couldn't survive I'll bet without microwave...
****
****ah well, we can only do our best, and disseminate info as we come across it and think it would be useful to pass on to others.....

***They lived in the US Northeast so had some trouble in winter finding local and seasonal foods. Makes a good case for cannin and preserving!

**Yes I can imagine, bitterly cold there in winter I guess....yes, canning and preserving, sadly more skills being lost.....but I do know lots of folk here who make relishes, jams and marmalade and pickle veg eg onions for winter.

**Me too! I enjoy canning although it is a lot of work. I do it because I like it and when we have an abundance of pears from the tree or garden tomatoes. Interesting how people once relied on it as a way to stay fed in the winter.

Absolutley, salting, curing, smoking, people wouldn't have eaten otherwise.

My mum had a nice recipe for a green tomato chutney. Here is a version I found on line....(this site is worth bookmarking imo)

How do you can your pears?......I should think in some kind of alcohol (port or something similar) would be very nice and comforting on a cold winters day......hic....lol.

Be great if you could share a recipe or two. Maybe get some others on board with the cozy joyous feeling of stacked shelves..... :)
