**It wasn't until the 9th grade that I had a teacher who valued nurturing student creativity more than anything else...He allowed us freedom to write what we wanted, including profanity if it wasn't solely for shock value.. He inspired me so much that I found myself creating stuff I wasn't required to and bringing it to him to get his judgement.. Some weird surrealist one-act plays which he had the class perform...Natch, some came to regard me as teacher's pet but I didn't much care...

**Many years later, after seeing 'Mr. Holland' Opus', I called him up to tell him how much he had to do with my continuing interest in writing and reading...He remembered me straightaway and was very appreciative...

*Miss S_, 6th grade. She was far and away the most supportive and "out of the box" teacher I ever had. Her style kept me going. One of my biggest regrets is that I never tried to find her to thank her.

*In 8th grade I had an English/Reading teacher who required a weekly book report and did not restrict, in any way, the books I was allowed to read.
"Out of the box" ...That''s the phrase alright..
My 9th grade English teacher was definitely that.. He was often in conflict with the school bigwigs for being so out of the box.... Cool guy...A playwright who looked like a 5 ft. 6 in. version of Abe Lincoln...Only with jeans, brown vest and tennis shoes...
