*All I seem to remember from moat of my English classes is talk of past participles, fast paronipples, , and "Write me a book report on Plodding Meadows by Alistair Drygulch."...
*
*
*It wasn't until the 9th grade that I had a teacher who valued nurturing student creativity more than anything else...He allowed us freedom to write what we wanted, including profanity if it wasn't solely for shock value.. He inspired me so much that I found myself creating stuff I wasn't required to and bringing it to him to get his judgement.. Some weird surrealist one-act plays which he had the class perform...Natch, some came to regard me as teacher's pet but I didn't much care...
*I was actually enjoying the class that much..
*
*
*Many years later, after seeing 'Mr. Holland' Opus', I called him up to tell him how much he had to do with my continuing interest in writing and reading...He remembered me straightaway and was very appreciative...

*Did you have your own Mr. Holland in school?
There are a few who I remember fondly because they seemed to like what they were doing and to care about the students. Probably most did, but some were better than others at communicating that.
That's one of the things I like most about my life, that I get to be Mr. Holland for children today. Not quite in the same way, since I'm not an official teacher, more like the unofficial computer tutor(also unofficial math tutor, English tutor, and guidance counselor), but I do try to let students know that someone likes them and wants to help them do well. (Again, most do. Sometimes it's easier to see that coming from me since, because I don't teach a class or grade them, they don't feel as though there's an adversarial relationship.) I can honestly say that I know of at least two graduates who remember me that way. One of the best moments I had at the school was when a student who started coming into the lab when he was 12 and was, um, sociallly awkward, let's say, and who I had made my assistant to give him a sense of self-worth, graduated high school and was able to talk to me as an adult.Followup Messages:
