Paul Kelly is probably best known for his recording 'Stealin' In The Name Of The Lord' back around 1969 or so...In the early 90s, there ws an anthology of his early work released as well as a new album called 'Gonna Stick And Stay'. Well, I loved that album...I also got the anthology and the booklet inside mentioned that he now lived in a little town in South Carolina...
Well, I called information and got his home phone number...When he answered the phone I said , "Hello is this Paul Kelly?" He said yes..."The Paul Kelly who recorded the great album called Gonna Stick And Stay?" That's me, he replied... So I went on to tell him how fine that album was and his earlier stuff as well... When I asked him about his next album, the answer saddened me. He said that he had accidentally ingested pesticide when attempting to get rid of some crawly things and it did serious damage to his throat. He probably would never do another album...
But at least I had the chance to give a great but lesser-known artist some roses...And 'Gonna Stick And Stay' still gives me the happies when I play it...
