My Own Mr. Holland

Posted by **murray** on Aug 21, 2013 at 1:49:33 PM:

All I seem to remember from moat of my English classes is talk of past participles, fast paronipples, , and "Write me a book report on Plodding Meadows by Alistair Drygulch."...

It wasn't until the 9th grade that I had a teacher who valued nurturing student creativity more than anything else...He allowed us freedom to write what we wanted, including profanity if it wasn't solely for shock value.. He inspired me so much that I found myself creating stuff I wasn't required to and bringing it to him to get his judgement.. Some weird surrealist one-act plays which he had the class perform...Natch, some came to regard me as teacher's pet but I didn't much care...
I was actually enjoying the class that much..

Many years later, after seeing 'Mr. Holland' Opus', I called him up to tell him how much he had to do with my continuing interest in writing and reading...He remembered me straightaway and was very appreciative...

Did you have your own Mr. Holland in school?
