Phantastes by George Macdonald
This is fantasy at its most charming and engrossing. This work had a profound impact upon C.S. Lewis went on to create his own magical world which he called Narnia... Macdonald's "Lilith' is also a remarkable achievement but for my money, 'Phantastes' is George Macdonald's masterpiece. It is a work I have returned a number of times since first reading it when I was 15 or so.....
The characters of this fantasy world will indeed enchant you and stay in your memory after the last page is turned...
