Baby Born at Penn Station: Express Delivery
MTA Police Officers assist in birth
There was an unexpected arrival at Pennsylvania Station in New York City on Wednesday: a 6 pound, 12 ounce baby boy.

Ana Aguirre, 32, told the Daily News that she felt fine when she commuted into the city from Centereach, Long Island into Manhattan early Wednesday to go to an appointment. But on her way home, she went into labor. "When I was returning, the pain got much worse," she said. "I had already bought the train ticket and was waiting for the train."

MTA officer Melissa DeFranceso told Yahoo! Shine that at around 9:45 AM, she and three other officers, Joe Cona, Vinay Hathiramani, and Burt Silva, got a call that a woman was in distress. Earlier that morning, they had called EMS to aid another passenger, so two paramedics were already in the train station. The officers located Aguirre in the district (precinct) waiting room. "She was doubled over in pain," said DeFranceso.
The officers escorted her into an office, and the EMS workers took over. "We had another call and when we returned—it was only 10-15 minutes later—she had had the baby." Little Oscar arrived at 10:04 AM.
After the baby was born, DeFrancesco and the other officers pitched in. "There were only two EMS," she said. "They were looking for some more help. They handed me the baby, and I took care of him while they helped the mom." The paramedics carried Aguirre in a stretcher to an ambulance waiting outside, and DeFrancesco brought out the baby swaddled in a blue blanket—much to the delight of other commuters and tourists. Mom and baby were then transported to Bellevue hospital to recover.
"Like any day at Penn Station it was quite busy," said DeFrancesco. "But with the baby being born it was pretty exciting. A little chaotic, but we all did what we had to do."
Yahoo! Shine couldn't reach Aguirre for comment, but according to the MTA, Aguirre and Oscar are doing well. He joins an 11-year-old sister, and two brothers, 6 and 4.
