*The media sensationalizes and profits from criminals too much, in my opinion. What's interesting is that people usually buy what's being sold as a result of some sort of morbid fascination. However, something happened here with this cover that seemed to cross the line for most people. Whether it's making movies about Whitey Bulger or running front page stories about Casey Anthony or Jodi Arias for weeks, there's an industry revolving around people's fascination with the bad guys. Most of the top rated shows these days are crime shows. I think the problem of over-portraying crime is way deeper and more sneakily pervasive than what Rolling Stone did although that cover is just the newest incarnation of an old problem. The media shoves the bad guys at us because customers can't resist. Maybe it's time we did though...and the outrage over this is a refreshing change perhaps.
It is very sad indeed and does seem to be bringing renewed attention to the fact. Many stores are pulling the issue off the shelf.
