*well I found out what's taken up residence under my deck.............
*
*A couple of weeks ago I had gone out to sit on my deck at night & heard a growl. Willingly adding a chromosome I simply went girlish & ran in the house.
*
*Last night I went out the backdoor onto the deck around 11 & startled something off the deck. Which immediately started to growl.
*
*Deciding I had added enough chromosomes between the last time this happened & my stint in Florida with the alligator, I was going to confront whatever it was.
*
*So.....
*
*I went into the garage & grabbed a baseball bat determined that I was going to scare off or take out whatever was growling at me.
*
*Of course this depended a lot on what "it" turned out to be.
*
*Fearlessly I turned on the back light & began pounding the baseball bat on the deck. On the fence. On the space between the deck & the fence.
*
*I think there was some grunting involved.
*
*No reply to my challenge.
*
*So I sat back down.
*
*GROWL!
*
*Directly below me!
*
*I stood up - bat in hand & muttered "Come On".
*I had to repeat that as it came out at least an octave higher then it should have.
*
*"COME ON!!!"
*
*"It" chose to remain silent.
*
*Sat back down again - bat at the ready.
*
*Then I heard it.
*
*Mewling...
*
*Like the kind of sound my daughter's 3 legged cat (Tripod) makes when it wants attention.
*This was coming from about 5 feet from where I was sitting. To my right for those of you taking notes.
*
*I glanced over & saw what looked like a head. Which promptly retreated back under the deck.
*
*I walked around (bat raised).
*
*The head came back up again & mewled.
*
*I tensed ready to swing the bat.
*
*Another mewl & it revealed itself.
*
*A baby raccoon.
*
*
*I lowered the bat. I'm not about to bash in the head of a little, defenseless (and though I hated to admit it) cute baby raccoon.
*
*So I "nudged" it with the bat hoping to scare it & make it run away. Instead it mewled again & started walking toward me.
*
*It wanted to be friends - I think.
*
*That was when I heard "the growl" again. Much louder . Much more meaningful.
*
*It was a warning.
*
*An "I'm going to spring at you in about two seconds & rip your throat open" kinda growl.
*
*Figuring one can never have enough chromosomes & not really in the mood to tangle with a pissed off mama raccoon in the dark............
*
*
*
*
*
*I fled!
*
*

interesting - i've never had a raccoon growl at me and we have lots of them - right now we have a family of 6 babies that come down one tree, go way up the next and play for an hour and then come down and rummage - even had one that used to come in the back door to eat the cat food!! kept the door closed for a few weeks 'til he/she got the route out of their system.
