Politics divide.
Look at the Beatles. Had Lennon not been politically vocal, "Let it Be ",now a highly regarded classic probably wouldn't have been kept from number one by a gravelly voiced actor singing a second rate showtune.
Lennon's politics narrowed the Beatles fan base, and hastened the break up, I believe.
