******** Seems that watermelon Oreos are creating some controversy... The company has tried a couple of different limited-edition flavors and this year's choice is watermelon...
********
********
********Some people seem to think the very concept is racist...

********
******** Is it?

*******Racist, no. Doesn't sound too tasty though. Watermelon and chocolate don't really go hand in hand. I could see watermelon with their golden creme cookie, that might be tasty.
******
******
******
****** That's another thing... Are they really Oreos?...From the picture of the package I saw, looks as though the cookies are vanilla and not chocolate...
******
******
******
******As far as the taste factor, I can't say as I'm not big on sandwich cookies in general...

*****Technically I think they are called golden creme. They are Oreos in the same sense that soft and chewy chips ahoy cookies are still chips ahoy chocolate chip cookies. But to me an Oreo is chocolate cookie with creme filling.

****The article I read mentioned that some people obviously have a problem with Watermelon Oreos...
****
****
****Now, if African-Americans say that the concept is racist, does that make it so because they are qualified to make that call?
****
***
***Perception matters, and if someone finds it offensive, why should someone else tell them that they're wrong for being offended? They're entitled to feel that way. It might be more productive to ask why other people find offense in something you don't than to dismiss those people.
***
**
** Actually I'd love to hear someone who's offended by the concept of a watermelon flavored cookie to explain why...The natural follow ups would be on whether that person is offended by watermelon flavored anything and whether the very mention of watermelon is racist... Is Tom T, Hall a racist because he recorded a song called "Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine"?

****Suppose the response was mostly positive...Most people liked this flavor. If a small amount of people had a problem with the very idea of it, should this limited edition product have an even shorter shelf life?
***
***That's up to Nabisco, isn't it? If they want to make it, it's their call. If they don't, also their call.
**
**
**
**Absolutely... They make the final call on how much importance they place on negative feedback...Chances are that negative feedback combined with poor sales would lead to a shorter shelf life for the product...

* And in regards to productive dialogue, how productive can it be if we were to start out with a given such as I'm totally unqualified to pass judgement on whether or not the other person should be offended by a cookie flavor?
*
You're only qualified to say whether or not you're offended and why. It's up to the other person to decide whether or not your reasons are valid. In the situation that started this line of discussion, can you see what's wrong with someone who isn't Jewish telling a Jew what he should or shouldn't find antisemitic?
Perhaps the person who lives with racism, sexism, antisemitism,... recognizes something that you don't see from your detached vantagepoint.Followup Messages:
