********* Now BC is politically incorrect...
*********
*********
*********More and more schools are insisting on BCE or 'Before Common Era'...
*********
*********
*********Some schools accept BS , BM and Before Obama...
********
********What, exactly, is your objection? Why do you think that schools should use BC? Because that's the way it has always been done? Because you think it's beneficial to the country if we explicitly use Jesus' birth as a historical reference point? Because you want to let all non-Christians know that they don't really belong here?
*******
*******
*******
*******
*******I think your first because is the most accurate...
*******
*******I'm just a guy who's closing in on 60 who can't help but wonder how much longer it will be before Christ is considered a full-fledged expletive not to be used in civilized conversation...
*******
******
******So this is less about politics than it is about you getting old and wanting things to stay the same? The US doesn't have a state religion, so is there any reason why secular schools should use BC instead of BCE? There are plenty of non-Christian religions in the country. There are even people who don't follow any religion. Don't all of those people deserve just as much respect as Christians? Why should non-religious schools reinforce the idea that everything should center around Christianity? No one is making "Christ" an expletive. However, things like this mean is isn't being given as much of a position of privilege as it had in the past. The thing is, as a Christian, you've (and I mean "you" generically. Whether or not it applies to you personally is your call) been on top for so long that you think you're being discriminated against when you're being treated like everyone else. Here's another example: You know how every year someone makes a fuss about a store saying "happy holidays" instead of "merry Christmas?" It isn't "happy holidays except Christmas," so the thing they're objecting to is that Christmas isn't being held in a position above everyone else's holidays. Does that seems fair to you?

*******
*******Weird how other faiths have always been on campuses raising their voices against so many things and BC was never a focus for protest...
*******
******
******Is that your criterion? Not whether or not something is the right thing to do? Not whether or not using "BCE" is a positive or negative development? Just whether or not you've heard complaints? I can tell you two things: One, my Hebrew school always used BCE and two, when I was a kid, I didn't think too much about it because I had more important things to worry about, but BC did give me a vague sense of discomfort. Maybe nobody made a big deal about it 40 years ago, but isn't it possible that we've learned something in that time and now we know better?

***** If other faiths claim offense because of their religion and the powers that be cater to it, is that not pubic recognition of their faith?
*****
****
****No. It's enforcing the laws that say that there is not to be a state religion. No religion should be given a position above any others.
****
*****
*****You say that Christians enjoyed a postion of privilege...if there is a policy which is between all or nothing, does that not simply transfer privilege rather than establishing a level playing field?
****
****No. Which religion does BCE privilege?
****
****...Or is that new position of privilege an earned payback with some similarity to affirmative action?...
*****
*****
****
****I see you misunderstand affirmative action, as well. It isn't "payback." It's an attempt to level the playing field. One could debate how effective it is, but that would require one to be more thoughtful than an old white guy who can't handle the world not being the same way it was when he grew up.

*** My , aren't we on the nasty side today?
***
**
**I'm sorry, but I see your posts as being full of a sense of privlege.
**

***
***I was in favor of affirmative action when it first came into being...When institutions had a clear record of denying opportunities solely because of skin color... But you're right in calling it an "attempt"... An attempt to r4ectify a shameful past by trading one form of privilege for another
**
**Wrong. It's an attempt at making the playing field more even. Starting out white is still an advantage. You'd have to be deep in denial to claim differently. If you want to do so, remember that anecdotes are not statistics.

*
*There are quite a few African-Americans who want their opportunities to be based solely on merit.. Can they make the grades? can they carry out their assigned job duties and be an asset to their companies? I have encountered some who regard affirmative action as an insult.,,, as a way of saying 'You can't cut it unless we help you in this way."
*

Again, anecdotes are not statistics. They have every right to feel that way. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to base policy on their feelings.

*
*You can keep affirmative action in place for decades to come and it will never wipe the slate clean...

I think you still don't understand. It's not about "you discriminated against us, so now if we discriminate against you, we're even." It's a recognition that being white is still an advantage.

* Yes, we should fight against discrimination in the here and now with everything we've got... But we can't penalize forever people who abhor what happened in the past as if they could control the fact that they were born white...
*

See above.

*

*
*
*
*
**
**...People denied opportunities solely because of skin color were granted opportunities solely because of skin color...
***
***It's an attempt but not genuine equality...
