****my daughter's coming your way next week

***Cool. If she'd like to meet up, you can email me her temporary phone number, or some other contact info if you don't have that (my email is above). I know a pub in Tel Aviv that hosts local musicians on Friday afternoons, if she'd be interested.

**I know she'll be in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem & Haifa. I'll mention it to her.

**How safe is it - in general?
**Of course being a father I'm nervous...

*I understand why you're asking, but I can't help but laugh at this question. So long as no new war or intifada is declared within the next week (which isn't quite hyperbole: this might actually happen given what's going on up north), she's probably safer here than in New York. There are some areas of Jerusalem that can be problematic, but they're not anywhere a tourist would go. Outside of that, well, I'll put it this way: my sister (18 at the time) lived for 5 months in an apartment that wasn't in "the bad part of Tel Aviv" on the brochure, but was one street over from it in practical terms. She never had any problems.
*
*If something *does* break out, whoever is responsible for her, tour guide, hotel, some institution that invited her, whatever, will prepare her for what's going on, or possibly move her if wherever they are is implicated. This country is depressingly good at preparing people in times of crisis. Worst case scenario, if something happens and she doesn't feel safe wherever she is, my apartment is in a city full of nothing important that's central enough that it's easy to get to, but far enough away that you really can't hit it by mistake, and I can offer a sofa. But we just had a war 6 months ago, so we shouldn't be scheduled for another one until at least 2015.
*
*All of this is moot if she's planning to rent a car, though. You are definitely right to be nervous if she wants to drive on Israeli roads.*
thanks - that goes a way toward easing my mind...........
She'll be traveling with a "Birthright Group". My understanding is that they'll be accompanied by 8 members of the IDF the whole time. My concern was with errant rockets & the like and concerns with what is going on in Syria. Not too much of that going on in NYC.
:)
Thanks for the couch offer but I don't think they'll all fit.
