**Not that this scenario is ever likely to happen, but I am really interested in getting honest replies.

**Imagine it would become law, that guns are sold to normal citizens only under the strictest conditions and it also would become law, that all or nearly all existing guns in private hands would be illegal and people are asked to turn them back.
**
**When I say it becomes law, I mean that the majority of US citizens will have voted for it and congress with an overwhelmingly majority will have said yes to it. All parties will have agreed. I am not thinking of some kind of tyrant or something.
**
**Now imagine a law obiding official will ring at your door and ask you to hand over your guns.
**
**Will you shoot at him?
**
**Will you use your gun?
**
**Will you maybe even give up your normal life, join some militia and take part in a civil war?
**
**Or will you hand over your guns even if you were not agreeing with what the majority has voted for?
**

* In America, especially, we are the descendants of people who risked their lives to flee government repression. It's deep in our collective Psyche.
* I have no guns to give up. That law abiding officer would probably beat me to a pulp trying to ascertain where my guns are hidden, then I'd be jailed for an extradinary amount of years because I have no registered weapons, therefore the weapons I have hidden with Sadam's WMDs were illegally obtained in the first place.
* So then I languish in prison as a criminal,when in fact, I did not turn over any weapons since I disarmed myself years ago at no one's prodding.
* You want to play what ifs! I'll play.

Here's another What If...
The law abiding officer does not knock at my door asking for weapons, because I have no registered weapons.
But I am a criminal, and sitting on an arsenal of guns, all stolen in an attack on a police arsenal of confiscated weapons 2,000 miles from my home.
