** I have always deplored Lennon's politics.
** He always seemed to focus on one segments wrongs while ignoring the misdeeds of those he championed.
** This man of peace advocated those who advocated violent upheaval. Not quite giving peace a chance there.
** Such as supporting that Black Panther who turned out to be very violent indeed.
** Abby Hoffman, Jerry Ruebin .... these were violent and agressive men.
** Even his buddy Phil Spector, well, we know what he did.
** Timothy Leary... just a drugged out whacko.
** John's choice of associates seem to be outside his expressed philosophy.
** Not that he didn't mean well.
** But, being an artist, a musician, a composer, and a poet, doesn't mean one is politically astute.
** Also, one must note the pronounced dichotomy of the man himself. As George Harrison remarked, John Lennon was both a saint and a bastardize.

* John and Yoko were pretty radical liberals when first coming to the U.S. But by the mid 70s John had mellowed out when it came to being a political activist. I mean he still wasn't afraid to speak his mind about how he felt regarding a current event but he wasn't out demonstrating either.

* John wasn't a saint and I'm sure he would've been the first to admit it. Although didn't he go around saying that he was Jesus sometime in the late 60s?:) But if he did say that I'm sure drugs had an influence.
His "Beatles bigger than Jesus" statement was a philosophical statement made to Maureen Cox, then taken out of context bye American Christian fundamentalists.
The statement was meant as a reflection on the state of Christianity among the youth of the day, and not an actual comparison between the Beatles and Jesus. It got blown out of proportion.
In another interview, 1969, I believe, he did say that everyone had Hitler as well as Jesus inside them, which I think is pretty accurate.
The guy had great vision.
But, yes. I'm glad he toned down on the activism in later years.
I don't knock him too hard for doing what he did, the remarkable place the times put him in is enough to turn anybody's head.
