In this day and age (knowing what we know about psychology, health, medicine, etc...) it's wrong on so many levels. Then again, you look back a few hundred years and this sort of thing was common practice. Males (especially wealthy high standing males) would have wanted their progeny to keep ruling for as long as possible and seeing how 28 would have been close to retirement age and 10/11 would have been right around the time a girl learned the responsibilities of parenthood, this would have been quite normal. Back then it would have been the equivalent of a 60 year old man marrying a 23 year old woman.

You then take an institution, like the catholic church, that has been around forever and it's not a large leap to see why this thing is somewhat tolerated. You kind of see it today still. Laws that were written or obeyed several hundred years ago may not apply today, but people still hold firm in those beliefs because to say they are wrong would shatter the faith that they hold so dear.

This by the way is NOT a glowing endorsement or approval of such horrific acts, merely a glimpse at how one could seemingly approve and legitimize such a thing that you and I consider downright evil.

But stuck in, old institutions like the catholic church and other religions don't really move at the quick pace of current governments. Hell, if you think it takes forever for shit to get done politically, take a closer look at religion. I consider myself a spiritual person, but religion fucks it up for a lot of folks.

Personally I think a 28 year old that "sleeps with" or "rapes" or "marries" or whatevers a 1-17 (even though 16/17 is the legal age of consent in some states I still think it's wrong if the guy is over 21) girl, should be strung up by the balls with kite string and left to hang until his junk rots off.
