This is due to a classic corporate hijacking of a process that started with good intent. If you get enough signatures on a petition, it will go to vote in a general election.
This has resulted in paid signature collectors hanging out in public places with stacks of clipboards with different petitions. There are some who will sign them to get the aggressive assholes out of their faces. There are some who will sign the ones they believe in. There are some who will not sign at all.
Depending on how I feel, my response will range from "I don't sign any petitions" to "Do you have one that will preserve the right to shop unharrassed by strangers"Followup Messages:
